More Content Now Childrens Health Your kids may love the tradition of decking the halls, but before you start, know that many decorations can trigger symptoms. Some people have contact skin allergies to terpene, found in the sap of trees, as well as inhalant allergies to mold spores and pollen brought into the house by fresh trees and greenery. Be aware that if you re-use artificial trees and other decorations from year to year, depending on how you store them, they can accumulate dust and mold. Both are common allergy triggers. More Content Now Senior Health According to the National Institute on Aging, older people tend to wake up more times throughout the night and sleep less deeply. People who get less sleep may experience depressed moods, and sleepless seniors are more prone to nighttime falls. While sleep patterns change with age, seniors who experience restless, interrupted sleep should see a doctor and get treated.

Health Risks of Staying in a Stranger’s Home – ABC News

Health Risks of Staying In a Stranger’s Home Allergens As long as youre staying in the home of someone you know and trust, or a host who has good reviews on a home rental website, its fairly safe to assume that theyve left you with clean bed sheets and towels. But that doesnt necessarily mean the linens are safe for everyone to use: People with sensitive skin or allergies may react badly to fabrics washed in certain detergents or abrasive cleaners, says Thomas. And pillows and duvets that arent laundered regularly may harbor dust mites that can aggravate asthma , eczema , and hay fever , according to a 2006 University of Worcester study. I have clients who always travel with their own sheets and towels because they just feel more comfortable knowing how and when theyve been washed, says Thomas. If theyre worried about waking up with a rash or itchy skin, its a good precaution to take. People with pet allergies or asthma may want to confirm before arriving that there is no pet dander, cigarette residue, or other potential triggers in the home, as well. Health Risks of Staying In a Stranger’s Home Bed bugs One in five Americans has had a bedbug infestation or knows someone who has, according to the National Pest Management Association. So anywhere youre sleeping in a bed thats not your own, its smart to be on the lookout.

Or at least request a pet-free room without feather pillows or bedding. Try not to use the heat or AC unless its necessary to help you sleep. Dont adjust the drapes, and request they not vacuum the room if youre staying more than one night. This may help whatever residual dust thats in the room stay in place. Pack pillow protectors to seal in dust and allergens, and your own pillowcase to make it homey.

2 teaspoons baking powder
2 huge eggs
1 3/4 cups versatile flour

Pop these in the oven for about 25 to 30 minutes, or till golden brown. When the color seems right, remove from the baking sheet to cool on a wire rack. When the biscotti are cool enough to handle, slice ‘em up! Utilizing a long-bladed knife, slice the cookies into 1/2 inch pieces.

Place the slices cut side up back onto the baking sheet. Bake for an additional 6 to 10 minutes on each side. Eliminate from heat, and now you’ve got a chocolate-y and scrumptious alternative to the standard biscotti, which make sure to be a huge a hit!

Does The Cold Cause A Cold? Local Doctor Explains – Wmbfnews.com, Myrtle Beach/florence Sc, Weather

Mikael Forssell Couldn’t Get to Training Because a Cat Was Near His Car | Bleacher Report

Local doctor explains – WMBFNews.com, Myrtle Beach/Florence SC, Weather SITE SEARCH Does the cold cause a cold? Local doctor explains Posted: webmaster@wmbfnews.com MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – You can be sure you’re going to feel the chill in the air when you walk out the door Tuesday. But when we catch a cold, is it really fair to blame it on the change in weather? One Myrtle Beach doctor said it is not necessarily the change in our temperatures during this time of year that has you “under the weather.” One Myrtle Beach resident said, she does believe the weather makes you sick. “I also do think that when it gets colder we will get sick just because you’re outside, it’s cold, you might not have a jacket on, your ears may not be covered,” she said.

A Runner’s Tale: EMU’s Ryan Gehman Overcomes Odds While Making NCAA Meet

Eastern Mennonite runner Ryan Gehman works hard to compete at a high level, but for him running is more than something he does it

Forssell, who has played for a range of clubs in England and Germany and is now at VfL Bochum, tweeted that he could not get to training on Tuesday because of a cat. The 33-year-old is allergic to cat hair and feared being able to get into his car without setting off his allergies. I came home feeling beaten, like I wasn’t good at anything. Despite the struggles, one great thing came out of his experience. Ryan fell in love with running. He handles the pain of running better than anyone I know, said EMU cross country coach Jason Lewkowicz. I tell him he’s the toughest runner I’ve ever coached. I think maybe some of the things he’s had to deal with in life makes running a freeing experience. Since coming to Eastern Mennonite Ryan’s hit his stride and this year he won the Division III South Eastern Regional championship, booking his spot in this weekend’s national championship meet. He really inspires his teammates, not with just his talent, but he works very, very hard, and just his perseverance to take on life’s challenges and face them day-by-day and accept the highs and lows.

Yakima Herald Republic | Asthma home-visiting program targets household triggers

Griselda Arias, left, the asthma program coordinator for the Yakima Valley Farmworkers Clinic, explains asthma to Carmen Ruvalcaba as 10-year-old asthma sufferer Andres Ruvalcaba, left, listens at their home in Prosser, Wash. Nov. 13, 2014. The clinic offers a program to teach families with asthmatic youngsters about asthma and advises them on how to minimize asthma triggers in the household. (GORDON KING/Yakima Herald-Republic)

Beyond practical household changes, Arias said another challenge is educating parents about what asthma actually is. Some families resist the diagnosis, insisting their children merely get bronchitis several times a year, rather than accepting the chronic nature of asthma. Some think that because their child can run and play without problems, he or she must not have asthma, not realizing that exercise-induced asthma is just one form the disease can take. Arias said she sometimes spends up to 45 minutes explaining what asthma is, what happens in the lungs and what each medication is for. A provider doesnt have that time, she said.

What excited Watt wasn’t the perfectly symmetrical straight-on shot from the same part of the shoot. This one was a little more jaunty. Watt’s body tilted toward the right as if in motion, he was looking down and the cowboy hat covered his eyes. “Old school,” Watt said, and asked for a copy. Watt is a football player with an old-school work ethic, and he’s one who cares about how he presents himself. No, he wasn’t interested in putting on big Texas hair in the form of blonde wigs, or looking like a steer wearing cut-out horns and a nose ring. Watt was interested in the more classic photo options presented to him.

Experts say the citys protocols dont go far enough to address the growing food-safety and public-health concern of the threat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 16 to 18 percent of kids suffering from allergies will have a reaction in school. And thats not the scariest part 25 percent of severe and potentially life-threatening reactions reported at schools happened in children with no previous diagnosis of food allergy, the federal agency reported. The schools have to have plans in place, said Dr. Todd Mahr, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics allergy and immunology department. School officials say managing student allergies is a team effort but they place responsibility for allergy-proofing schools on principals, school nurses and parents.

Upper Dublin School Board hires new technology director, allergist – Ambler Gazette – Montgomery News

Since 2012, our Be More Than a Bystander campaign has ignited a powerful conversation in this country, providing parents with the tools, information, and resources they need to talk to their children about what to do when they witness bullying firsthand and the safe steps they can take to intervene. With nearly $80 million in donated media support, the PSA campaign has achieved enormous and vital exposure. As a result, 45 percent of parents have become aware of the campaign message, and research shows that significantly more parents say theyve spoken to their childs school about bullying and have looked for bullying-related information and resources online. We need to continue this positive momentum. The Ad Council is also partnering with Tilt, the worlds largest crowdfunding platform, with a goal of raising $100,000 by December. The donations will be spent to create new groundbreaking work for the bullying prevention campaign. Change.org and Participant Media, TakeParts parent company, will also be working pro bono to raise awareness of this crucial conversation and to garner more support.

“We want Ashley County residents to stay healthy this flu season, and getting a yearly flu vaccine is the best line of protection,” Tammy Cook, Ashley County Health Unit administrator said. “We encourage everyone to come to the clinic to get their flu vaccine.” People of all ages can get the flu; but certain people are more likely to have serious health complications if they get it. This includes older people, young children, pregnant women, people with certain health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), and people who live in nursing homes. “Last year’s flu season was the worst in Arkansas in terms of flu deaths in the last three decades. This is a reminder that flu is not an illness that should be taken lightly,” said Dirk Haselow, M.D., state epidemiologist at ADH. “Many Arkansans have lost loved ones to the flu. Before you decide to skip the flu vaccine, think about those who care about you or count on you.” The flu vaccine is safe and does not cause the flu. Some people may have mild soreness and redness near the site of the shot and a low fever or slight headache.

Ex-Apple CEO bets on Web healthcare with MDLive – Yahoo News

For eye injuries, people often go to the emergency room, but there arent always physicians on hand who know how to care for those patients. Eyes make doctors nervous, Bandza said, because vision issues are so closely connected to the brain. People are still very overwhelmed when it comes to eye health, because its such an intricate structure, she said. In her clinic so far, most complaints have been what she calls front of the eye concerns: allergies, redness and dryness among those who work outdoors and in the fields. Theres also the occasional injury from being struck in the eye by a branch. She gets about two patients an hour, and hopes to bump that up to three or four. Many people come in with eye strain or headaches caused by undiagnosed refractive error like nearsightedness or astigmatism, conditions that occur when the shape of the eye prevents it from focusing properly.

Health Unit Giving Flu Vaccines Dec. 5 – News – Newport Independent – Newport, AR – Newport, AR

email

Of the 38 people tested, all of them tested negative to an allergy for penicillin. Both studies led researchers to the conclusions that perhaps those who think they have a penicillin allergy should consult an allergist and have a penicillin allergy skin test to confirm the condition. This may provide good news for those who turn out not to have a penicillin allergy. And just why is that? WebMD explains: Penicillin is a more affordable antibiotic than those given when a patient is allergic to it. If more people seek advice from an allergist and conduct the penicillin skin testing and find out they are not allergic, they will likely save money at the pharmacy. Plus, penicillin is highly useful in healing diseases, whereas the alternative antibiotics may not be as powerful.

Bake at 350 degrees for Thirty Minutes.

Peach Dumplings

2 tbsps reducing

7/8 cup cream

Peaches

2 1/2 cups cold water

Mix and sort flour, baking powder, and salt. Rub in shortening with suggestions of fingers, include cream progressively, cutting it in with a knife. Turn on a floured board, knead somewhat, pat and roll out to 1/2 inch density.

Shape with a huge biscuit cutter. Pare juicy, ripe peaches, cut in halves lengthwise, get rid of stones. Cut in quarters and place 3 quarters of a peach on each circle of dough, enclose them, pressing the edges together. Location in a buttered cake pan 1 1/2 inches apart. Look sugar around dumplings and put cold water over sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, or till golden brown. Baste 3 times.

Peach Cake with Sweetened Cream

2 cups flour

4 tsps baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

3 tablespoons shortening

3/4 cup milk

5 peaches

Raisins, if desired

Sugar

Mix and look the first 3 ingredients. Rub in reducing with tips of fingers. Include milk, blending it in with a knife. This dough needs to be soft sufficient to spread in a superficial, well-buttered pan to the depth of one inch. (Include more milk if necessary.)

Pare ripe, juicy peaches. Halve lengthwise. Get rid of stones and press halves into dough (cut side up) in parallel rows, leaving a little space in between rows.

Brush peaches over with melted butter, sprinkle with raisins and sugar. Serve hot, either plain, with milk, cream, or perhaps whipped cream.

Whole Foods recalls salads sold in NY, NJ, CT | PIX 11

Holmberg said her friends thought she was crazy when she described what she felt while working out – tingly scalp, itchy nose, and watery eyes, according to a release from Essentia Health. When she ran the Duluth Mother’s Day 5K this year, her symptoms were so strong she decided to see a doctor. Dr. Alaaddin Kandeel is an Allergist at Essentia Health in Duluth. At first, Holmberg’s diagnosis was a mystery, but Dr. Kandeel said listening to all of her symptoms was key. “I mean, it goes against all that we know about allergies, because if you are allergic to a food you should get symptoms right away, however in Elaine’s case she does not get symptoms when she eats the food if she’s not exercising,” he explained.

Tick bite leads to food allergy for Durham woman :: WRAL.com

Ticks

When bitten by an infected tick, people like Smith produce an antibody to Alpha-Gal, which causes the allergic reaction. The carrier is the Lone Star Tick. Drag a towel through tall grass near a wooded area and Lone Star ticks are likely to appear. The female has a lone white spot on its back, while the male has white lines across the rear edges of his back. North Carolina State University Veterinarian Dr. Ed Breitschwerdt’s research lab specializes in tick-borne organisms.

Pre-packaged Caesar salad and Mesclun Goat Cheese salad with sell-by date of July 11 are affected by the recall. Stored in 4-ounce containers, the salads were sold Monday at Whole Foods stores in New York, New Jersey (excluding Princeton, Cherry Hill and Marlton) and Connecticut (excluding Glastonbury, West Hartford and Bishops Corner). The salad labels were erroneously swapped and therefore the Caesar Salad packages contain tree nuts and the Mesclun Goat Cheese packages contain a Caesar dressing containing fish and egg as an ingredient, the company said in its recall notice posted Tuesday. Customers with allergies to nuts, fish or eggs run the risk of suffering serious or life-threatening reactions if they eat the products. All the effected salads have been removed from Whole Foods shelves, and signs announcing the recall have been posted in tri-state area stores. Customers can bring the salads and their receipt back to Whole Foods for a full refund.

There have been suggestions that they should offer two types of perfumes – some with allergens in them and consumer advice about the content, and others with no allergen. “I expected big groups to take the initiative on this matter but it turns out that they are the most risk averse,” said Corticchiato. One problem for big perfume brands is that their label sells a dream which is incompatible with the message “this product may cause allergies.” Dior, Guerlain and parent LVMH declined to comment for this article as did Hermes. Chanel said it stopped using lyral in 2010 and has been evolving its formulas in anticipation of new rules. “At Chanel, we follow very closely talks about regulation and scientific findings concerning raw materials,” Jacques Polge, Chanel’s chief perfume creator for 36 years, said in an emailed response to questions. Polge said Chanel controls its formulas and supply chains to ensure its natural oak moss is bereft of the allergens targeted by Brussels. That way, “we can respect the original scent”.

Charlotte White loves the outdoors and cooking out, but she cant enjoy a lot of barbecuing like she used to. I have got to the point I cant eat regular hamburger, ground beef, steaks. As much as everybody loves a good steak, I cant eat em. Whys that? An expert from Mississippi State University says its likely due to a bite from the Lone Star Tick. The tick carries a sugar similar to one found in meat, but its bite triggers an immune response that can trigger an allergy to red meat. People with a propensity for allergies are more likely to develop the red meat allergy, Mississippi State University expert Jerome Goddard said. He added, The severity of the allergic reaction will also vary from person to person. You can find the Lone Star Tick in more than a quarter of the United States, from Iowa to Texas and from Mississippi to Maine, mostly in wooded areas with thick underbrush.

What Trees Should An Allergy-prone Gardener Plant? Dan Gill’s Mailbag | Nola.com

When purchasing an October Glory red maple tree, must I say I need a female tree or is the October Glory already a female tree? Does the female tree always have fruit? — Denise Bannon ANSWER: You do not need to specify male or female when asking for an October Glory red maple. October Glory maples belong to a vegetatively propagated clone originally derived from an individual female red maple tree. All October Glory maple trees are genetically identical to each other, and they are all females. Yes, the female red maples produce fruit. But the October Glory red maple tree will likely be too young to be sexually active, and will not have fruit on it.

Rosencrans also said he needs time to ensure workers are thoroughly trained to process the texts and educate the public about the shortfalls of choosing texts over calling. Emergency officials in areas that have implemented texting stress the option should be used as a last resort because phone calls allow a more personal exchange with dispatchers. Phone calls also often trigger a more precise GPS (Global Positioning System) address than texts, which is why people texting are advised to specify their location if possible. Advocates say texting could save lives because it may be the only means to safely communicate in domestic violence, hostage situations or other crimes where speaking could endanger them. Texting also could help people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, supporters say. Protocols must be developed for processing videos and photos from the public because Rosencrans doesnt want dispatchers distracted from assisting emergency callers due to an onslaught of visual data that may not be of any immediate value to emergency responders.

The shop’s owner, Eric Buchanan, says they have removed anything having to do with marijuana from the store for the kids’ party. At 9 p.m., the shop will open its doors for anyone 21 and older. At that party, marijuana is allowed, as long as the attendees purchase a one-night membership. This way, they say, it is legal for those adults. Not everyone is in favor of the party. Scrumptious Dessert Recipes

Posted by on Nov 1, 2014 in Recipes

Regardless of if you’re a food preparation lover, or simply a pro at ordering pizza, you most likely discover time to work up your favorite dessert recipes every now and then!

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’re in luck: from birthdays and anniversaries, to holidays and supper celebrations, there’s always an excellent factor to go out your preferred mixing bowl and check out fun brand-new dessert dishes.

One of the best things about dessert dishes is that they’re usually quite hard to ruin. A flattened soufflé might not be as quite as the dish picture, but you can always conceal a little flaw under a scoop of fresh whipped cream, ice cream or gelato.

Trying to impress somebody special? Do not provide waxy store-bought chocolates to your sweetie on an anniversary or Valentine’s Day! Rather, surprise them with homemade brownies, decadent red velvet cake or sugar cookies embellished with sweet chocolate kisses nestled in the center.

If chocolaty cakes aren’t your sweet-tooth design, you could take pleasure in producing fruit-filled desserts. From conventional apple pies to adventurous fruit tarts layered with vibrant kiwi, star fruit or berries, the flavor mixes are endless. Custards, bread puddings and cheesecakes likewise make excellent alternatives to brownies and chocolaty dessert dishes.

Dinner visitors may not have the ability to concur on whether escargot is a culinary delight or a slimy yard critter, however everyone is sure to be glad at the sight of homemade desserts striking the table at the end of the meal. Whether your close friends are food snobs or plate cleaners, something as basic as a warm plate of cookies filled with chocolate chips, nuts or dried out berries will certainly keep everybody smiling.

For a more sophisticated twist on cookies after supper, attempt serving thin, crunchy cookies or biscotti with little glasses of a sweet dessert wine for dipping.

Dessert dishes also make a terrific method to introduce kids to the enjoyable of food preparation. Stimulating recipes in the blending bowl (and licking the spoon) is constantly fun for youngsters, and they make certain to love decorating sugar cookies or mini-cupcakes with colorful icing and sprays for vacations or birthdays-or as a method to pass time on a rainy day.

Of course, not all dessert recipes have to be so decadent.

Lighter dessert recipes are specifically nice in the summer season time. For an easy treat, a yummy choice of fresh fruits can be sliced and organized to produce vibrant fruit trays, or combined with ice for rejuvenating smoothies. For another kid-friendly task, try helping them produce popsicles made from pureed fruits, fruit juices or yogurt-based smoothie mixes.

Homemade ice creams and sorbets are much easier to make than you might believe, and making them in the house permits you to make sure that the ingredients are fresh and natural, high in taste and low in unwanted additionals like excess sugar, corn syrups and preservatives.

Fruits, chocolates, cakes, cookies, sorbets-what do all these dessert recipes share? Fun! Creating and preparing dishes is enjoyable, but sharing them is even much better. Exactly what are you waiting for? Get that mixing bowl ready!

Less than a third of Iowa’s vaccination exemptions are for a medical reason, which must be verified by a health care professional. The rest are classified as religious exemptions, which only requires a parent to sign a statement saying the immunizations conflict with their religion. Spokeswoman Amanda Lewis, of Des Moines Public Schools, said district leaders are aware of such statistics. “We certainly hope that parents in our district or anywhere in Iowa do not abuse this exemption, as it is relatively easy to obtain and impossible to confirm,” she said. “The district strongly believes that the immunization of students is an important public health issue that impacts the well-being of our students as much as any other safety measure we take in our schools.” Iowa has ranked well in national vaccination reports.

Some food allergies can be fatal. Researchers experimented on mice, exposing some mice born and raised in sterile conditions to peanut allergens. They also tested mice given antibiotics as newborns, a practice which significantly reduced gut bacteria. Both groups of mice showed significantly higher levels of antibody response against peanut allergens than did regular mice with average gut bacteria. Their sensitization to food allergens could be reversed if Clostridia bacteria were introduced back into the guts of the mice. “It’s exciting because we know what the bacteria are; we have a way to intervene,” Nagler said.

Foods Rich in Histamines Can Trigger Food Intolerance Manifestations

Posted by on Oct 28, 2014 in Food Intolerances

Lots of people experience food intolerance, and there are many foods that are rich in histamines that can cause food intolerance signs. These responses can include digestion system issues that like spasms, looseness of the bowels, irregularity, and stomach discomfort. Other symptoms can range from flatulence to headaches to skin breakouts as well as eczema.

Our bodies can not digest some foods that have high histamine levels because our digestion system lacks the enzymes it requires to guarantee we don’t struggle with these symptoms. Eating foods rich in histamines like pizza, fish, some vegetables, and some fruits can cause these typically troublesome food intolerance signs. Beverages like coffee, cocoa, wine, and beer also have high histamine levels.

Frequently individuals avoid these high histamine level foods to prevent reactions or symptoms, however there is hope. Our bodies have to change the low levels of Diamine Oxidase or DAO and that is being done through a supplement now authorized by the FDA – NDI. NDI is different than an antihistamine that simply blocks the trouble. NDI replenishes our bodies with the DAO we need to help us tolerate foods that have high histamine levels.

Right here’s a good list of foods that are high in histamines that cause food intolerance signs:

Fish like tuna, smoked fish, sardines, canned fish, and fish sauces
Pizza and sauerkraut
Wine and beer consisting of sparkling wine or champagne
Cheeses
Processed and smoked meats like salami, ham, bratwurst, and bacon
Veggies like tomatoes, spinach, eggplant, avocados, mushrooms, canned vegetables, and salads that are commercially prepared
Fruits consist of strawberries, bananas, papayas, kiwi, pineapple, tangerines, mango, grapefruit, and red prunes
Dressings and sauces like ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, balsamic or red wine vinegar have high histamine levels
Sunflower seeds, walnuts, walnuts, cashews, and peanuts
Breads that are made with yeast

Newly bought foods that are saved in your fridge really acquire a greater histamine level with the maturation procedure. The freshness drops and the histamine count increases. While selecting fresh meat is sensible, anytime a meat is processed, it acquires a greater histamine count. Beyond high histamine counts, foods that go through the maturation process can also trigger a boost in biogenic amines.

Fresh fish that you buy will certainly likewise increase histamine levels because fresh fish spoils quicker. Germs that establishes in stored or cooled fish can also trigger high histamine levels. Any fish that is smoked or marinated will just cause histamine levels to be greater.

Instead of avoiding these foods, renew your DAO levels with the supplement NDI. You digestive tract, specifically your lower gut will certainly benefit from the replenished results that NDI offers allowing you to eat foods that are high in histamine levels. You can avoid the often extreme food intolerance signs by ensuring your digestive system teems with the enzymes it needs to tolerate high histamine foods. Select foods wisely and re-energize your digestion system to profit of a healthy diet packed with the foods you take pleasure in.

Thanks to Naturally Vitamins, Americans now have access to HISTAME, a development formula offering wish to the countless Americans who experience food intolerance. If you have food intolerance signs, attempt Histamine and consume the foods you enjoy.

Once registered through palm recognition, a patients name is identified and their correct medical record is retrieved during each visit to the hospital. The system will speed up registration, Hergott said. It’s also expected to reduce the possibility of medical identity theft and eliminate duplicate medical records. Another added benefit of the system is the ability to identify a person who arrives at emergency department unconscious or unable to speak with no identification. If the patient is already in the system, the scanner can be used bedside to retrieve medical records that provide doctors and nurses with information such as medical history, allergies and current medications. The hospital registration staff is currently being trained to use the new technology. Use of the scanner will be optional for patients.

California drought stings bees, honey supplies – Yahoo Finance

“If this would persist, you’d see higher food costs, higher pollination fees and unfortunately higher prices for the commodity of honey.” Many California beekeepers, including Gene Brandi’s brother, are taking their hives to states such as North Dakota where they can forage in clover and buckwheat fields. The drought is hurting businesses such as Marshall’s Farm Honey, which supplies raw honey to high-end restaurants, grocery stores and farmers markets in Northern California. The Napa Valley business is having trouble making and buying enough honey to meet the demands of its customers. Many varieties such as honey made from sage and star-thistle aren’t available at all because it’s too dry for their flowers to produce nectar. “They keep coming back wanting more, and it’s very painful to have to say, ‘We don’t have it,'” said Helene Marshall, who runs the business with her husband Spencer.

Study: Men, lesbians more likely to have orgasms – WPFO FOX 23 | Maine, Local, News, Entertainment, ME

Its not that there was a trend toward a benefit from raw milk and our study wasnt big enough to capture it; its that there was no hint of any benefit, said nutrition expert Christopher Gardner, Ph.D., professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center and senior author of the study. Im quoting a Stanford release here, as I cant find anything about the study on the WAPF website. When claims about all-natural foods are merely anecdotal, it works against the food movement and undermines nutrition science, Gardner added. Lets get to the part thats real and do away with myths and anecdotes. Beneficial Bacteria (Probiotics) The term probiotic in reference to good bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, was first coined in the 1960s, and research in the area has progressed considerably in the last 20 years, according to the World Health Organization. In a 2001 report onthe health and nutritional properties of probiotics in food, WHO defined probiotics as live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. And M.E. Sanders, a leading expert in the field, wrote in an article for Clinical Infectious Disease Journal saying that the term probiotic should only be used for products that meet the scientific criteria for this term. She goes on to propose that Probiotics must be identified to the level of strain, must be characterized for the specific health target, and must be formulated into products using strains and doses shown to be efficacious. Randomized double-blind studies have provided evidence of probiotic effectiveness for the treatment and prevention of acute diarrhea and antibiotic-induced diarrhea, as well as for the prevention of cow milkinduced food allergy in infants and young children, according to the overview in that same journal. Further more, research studies have also provided evidence of effectiveness for the prevention of travelers diarrhea, relapsing Clostridium difficileinduced colitis, and urinary tract infections.

Squeaky clean Singapore gets messy: Blame the ghosts

Offerings left at a public housing estate in Singapore

Yeo said. “For the younger generations, they are maybe not so familiar with the festival. It won’t make much difference to them.” Many may now focus less on superstitious aspects — such as appeasing angry spirits — and more on offerings to the ancestors. But Dr. Yeo doesn’t expect the festival will vanish.

Dear Annie: I would like to contribute to the responses to “Frustrated with Noise,” who complained about young children in church. When my sons were small, they were a wild bunch running down the aisles of our synagogue. Our rabbi never reprimanded them. If a baby cried during services, the rabbi would always ask the parents not to remove the child. One day he explained: He was a Holocaust survivor. The first year after he was liberated from the concentration camp, there were no children at services. They had all been murdered.

Patronis Parents Want EpiPens in Schools

Thousands of local kids, with undiagnosed allergies, will not be able to get immediate treatment for an allergic reaction at school. Florida law prohibits faculty from administering injections to students without a prescription. Sears, is pushing a proposal that would allow schools to stock a supply of EpiPens and use them on students who need them, prescription or not. Sears said, “Each school district must pass that law to put it into practice.” Sears started a Food Allergy Awareness Committee at Patronis. The group of parents are handing out flyers to every teacher, with a picture of a Patronis student and their particular allergy. Sears said, “I want to make sure that every teachers recognizes her [Kendall] and if they see her exhibiting any symptoms they are like, ‘Oh she needs attention right now.’ Every student needs that.” Sears is hoping parents at other schools will follow her lead and form their own groups, helping to better identify children with medical needs.

Stinging Nettle: While scientific evidence is inconclusive, Web MD reports that taking supplements of stinging nettle at the start of ragweed season appears to help ease the severity of symptoms with fewer side effects than antihistamine drugs. 3. Ragweed pollen allergy season in full swing – WGEM.com: Quincy News, Weather, Sports, and Radio

Hay fever can cause a runny nose, congestion, itchy eyes and sneezing. Lee County Health Department officials say there are some simple ways to avoid allergy triggers this time of year. “To reduce the exposure to ragweed, limit your time outdoors, when at home or in the car keep your windows closed and the air conditioner running,” Rosa Haukedahl, of the Lee County Health Department, said. “If you are outside and doing an outdoor activity when you get home change your clothes and take a shower.” Another way to avoid allergies to ragweed is to rinse out your nostrils with a salt water solution once or twice a day using a Neti Pot or bottle system. “This year, 100 percent of what we offer have to be whole grain. We’ve gone through the process of reformulating all of our products to meet this standard. We can keep some of the things the kids like, but we also make it healthier.” Coleman said lowering the sodium content of foods served in the schools is the other point of emphasis this school year. “I really don’t think we are going to have a problem meeting the targets because we have prepared ahead of time,” Coleman said. “We knew it was coming so we have already started looking for lower sodium products.” All those requirements don’t mean good taste will be sacrificed, however. “We’ve worked with a chef and we’ve developed our own spice blends for the state of Mississippi,” Coleman said. “We have a bunch of spices blended together that we can use in our recipes instead of using salt and pre-packaged seasonings that are high in sodium,” Low-sodium vegetables, canned products and USDA commodities shipped to the school district will also be lower in salt content. All of the tasty, yet healthy foods prepared for DeSoto County school children still needs to be paid for and the district offers a program that helps parents be sure their youngsters don’t forget their meal money. My Payments Plus is an automated program to help parents monitor their children’s lunch balances, view purchases, and even make payments into their child’s accounts. While meal money can be pulled from the account for a small service fee, Coleman suggests using the system, if only to just check balances, which can be done free of charge.

“And it also splits the businesses that survive within the first five years between 20 and 80 percent — I guess we’re in the 20 percent now.” When she started, she said she was taking a huge risk, but since then it has paid off. The company has seen steady expansion since its inception. During the first year, Carlyle was the company’s sole employee, cleaning residences herself. But her clientele continued to grow, and since then she has hired eight employees, all from the local community. The company has also expanded into cleaning office spaces and doing post-construction cleaning work. Carlyle said she hopes that the expansion will not end — she wants to eventually open another store in Winchester. Right now, the company still largely cleans residential spaces.

EMS can be advised of allergies or specific medical conditions and police can have the photo of a missing child in seconds rather than minutes or hours. Having the information that is available through a Safety Profile can greatly affect the way we respond to an emergency, said Athens Fire Chief Tony Kirk. If we know exactly where we are going and who we are looking for in a house fire or at the scene of a vehicle accident, those details can help us assess and then respond to those citizens more efficiently. Citizens can create a SafetyProfile at smart911.com . With Smart911, citizens can link both home and work addresses to mobile phones, which can be passed on to responders in the field for more a detailed, rapid response. Additional information including pets in the home, vehicle details in the event of an accident, and even emergency contacts can all be included in a Safety Profile. All information is optional and the citizen has the ability to choose what details they would like to include. The benefits of this information on a 911 call from a cell phone are immeasurable, said 911 Director RV White.

These include eczema (a skin inflammation), poor weight gain, stomach aches or other vague symptoms. As with infants, it’s very important that a child have formal testing and a consultation with a specialist before making a diagnosis. Blood tests for food allergies can be unreliable and misleading. (Some companies will do them for a fee and not even involve a doctor.) They can miss an allergy or show an abnormal result when everything is normal. This can lead to unnecessary worry and further testing. Or lead to diet changes that can result in nutritional problems.

Breastfed babies usually nurse from both breasts at a feeding. To mimic this, change the baby’s position once during a bottle-feeding. This ensures good, symmetrical eye development. Do not force the bottle nipple into baby’s mouth. Rather, tickle his lips with the nipple and when he opens wide, place the nipple into his mouth completely so that his lips are flanged around the base of the nipple, not pursed tightly on the end of it. This helps him to remember to open wide when breastfeeding which is essential for good milk transfer. Avoid feeding baby if Mom will arrive soon.

Theyre good by themselves, but they arent super-filling. So smother them with peanut butter. If you ever tire of apples and bananas covered in peanut butter, pick up a thing of Greek yogurt, get your handy peanut butter and some honey get it locally sourced if you can, it helps your allergies and mix it all up in a bowl them. (My advice: Use equal portions peanut butter, yogurt and honey.) Dip your fruit, dip your fingers, pour the whole batch down your throat because its so damn tasty. Vegetables: Just like fruits, vegetables will also help you maintain your mortal husk/body/life force when youre in a pinch. Just like with potatoes, you can cut them, cover them with spices and bake them up, or you can eat them raw, providing you have something to dip/smother them in (dressing, hummus, pure sriracha, etc.).

(AP) – The New Jersey Casino Control Commission said it can’t force the owners of two casinos threatened with closure to stay open another four months while new buyers are sought. Three Atlantic City-area state lawmakers last month asked the commission to force the Showboat and Trump Plaza to remain open past their expected closings dates this summer. In an Aug. 1 letter, Commission Chairman Matthew Levinson told state Sen. James Whelan and Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo and Chris Brown that deciding when to close a casino is a private business decision, beyond the commission’s authority. The politicians also say companies that close a casino should not be allowed to bar a new owner from running the site as a casino. But the commission says it can’t require that, either.

The region’s largest maternity ward, Magee has had 11,000 births in the past year. The looming increase in births mirrors a national trend, with August being the most popular birth month in 2012 and 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A spokeswoman for Magee also said the hospital typically sees more births in the summer season compared to the winter months but is expecting more this year. Jumps in birth rates have been historically linked to conditions that drive people indoors. “A textbook example is the New York blackouts,” said Dr. Logan, “People wanted to stay inside at night, be close with their partners, and nine months later there was a spike in birth rate.” Micro spikes in birth rates can even occur after a regular winter, Dr.

Most of the tips are pretty simple. Make sure your child’s medical records are updated and available to the school, along with your full contact information. This should include information on any medication your child is taking, as well as any allergies or special needs, and whether the school has your permission to administer certain drugs to your child. If your child does have allergies, make sure you and the school nurse have an action plan to treat your child as quickly as possible, should they have a reaction. Do a dry run with your child on their route to school, looking for potential hazards.

“We still traditionally take payments on the lunch line, but the responsibility of lunch money or breakfast money and monitoring your child’s lunch balance is with the parents,” Coleman said.

Does Your Youngster Have a Food Allergy or a Food Intolerance?

Posted by on Oct 8, 2014 in Food Intolerances

Did you understand that just about one to two percent of the population in fact has a food allergy– most are in fact food intolerances. It can be hard for parents to know if their kid has a food allergy or intolerance. Right here are a few of the indicators to look for.

Food Allergies vs. Food Intolerances

A food allergy is the result of a normal substance triggering an unusual immune response. Food allergy symptoms in youngsters consist of hives, skin rash, swelling, sneezing and coughing and headaches. If a kid’s allergy is serious enough, it can even trigger anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal. If a youngster suffers anaphylactic shock, tissues swell to the point that the throat and mouthgreatly swell and block breathing. Moms and dads of a child with a severe food allergy need to constantly carry an epinephrine pen in case anaphylactic shock takes place.

On the other hand, a food intolerance is a failure to process food. Usual food intolerances are dairy products and wheat. These food intolerances take place due to the fact that the gastro-intestinal tract cannot produce the enzymes required to break down food. The food can pass right through the body prior to food digestion is completed, or parts of the food can even assault the stomach lining and damage it.

Food intolerance signs are generally more postponed and aren’t life threatening, but if a food intolerance is left neglected it can be really uncomfortable for kids. If food leaves the body prior to it’s processed, nutrients are also lost, causing nutritional issues.

Food Allergy Screening for Children

Food allergy testing for children involves skin tests. A doctor may do a prick test, which involves pricking the skin, where a percentage of a suspected irritant is put on it. If there is an allergy, the kid will certainly have a response to the substance.

Difficulty screening also involves direct exposure to an irritant. The client swallows a series of capsules to see if any provoke a response.

Another type of food allergy testing is called a removal test. Foods that are thought to be triggering an allergy are eliminated, and gradually re-introduced one at a time to see which ones are causing signs.

Erin Stringer has actually composed for various publications, including http://www.healthchoices.ca, an extensive wellness and health directory site in Canada.

The review appears in the latest edition of the medical journal Pediatrics. The evidence strongly suggests that side effects from vaccines are incredibly rare, the study authors said. They found no ties between vaccines and the rising number of children with autism, as a small but vocal group of anti-vaccine activists, including actors Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carey, have said. The review also found no link between vaccines and childhood leukemia, something that was suggested in earlier studies. The researchers found that some vaccines did cause a few adverse effects but it was only for a tiny fraction of the population. There was evidence that the meningococcal vaccine can lead to anaphylaxis a severe, whole-body allergic reaction in children allergic to ingredients in the vaccine. A study of the polio vaccine found that children with atopic dermatitis and a family history of allergies did have a higher chance of developing sensitivity to food allergens.

The VISTA-DME and VIVID-DME studies will continue as planned for a total of three years. About Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) or “swelling of the macula” is a common complication in the eyes of patients with diabetes. It is the most frequent cause of vision loss in patients with diabetes and eventually can lead to blindness.1,2 It is estimated that of the 29.1 million American adults living with diabetes, 1.5 million have been diagnosed with DME, and approximately another million cases are undiagnosed.3,4,5 DME occurs when blood vessels in the retina are damaged by chronic high blood sugar levels caused by diabetes. This allows fluid from blood vessels to leak into the retina, causing macular swelling. Fluid in the macula can cause severe vision loss or blindness. The macula is the part of the retina responsible for central, fine vision.

Graff, who is director of CER for the National Pharmaceutical Council, seeks a framework that offers a balance between population-based approaches and individualized decision-making. The framework calls for offering the greatest flexibility when failure to do so could cause irreversible harm to the patient, and the authors include examples. In some therapeutic areas, such as certain allergies, a patient who is asked to use a less expensive drug before switching might suffer itchy eyes or a runny nose, but these symptoms are not life-threatening.

Nasal congestion is a swelling or infection of the within of the nose and nasal passageways. The infection can be bacterial such as part of a sinus infection. It might be viral such as a cold or an allergic reaction with inflammation and nasal blockage. The nasal passage is like a major hallway where air is continuously flowing in and out from respirations from the lungs by way of the nose. The regular nasal mucosa is pink. Inflamed or contaminated mucosa is red. Allergy typically has blush nasal mucosa.

Extending off this main corridor on each side are hollow areas like empty rooms without any doors. These vacant spaces extending off the nasal hallway are your sinuses. As air flows by way of the main nasal corridor, it will swirl in little eddies currents in to these vacant spaces of your sinuses. As air swirls in and about your sinuses, the sinuses will gradually collect dust, dirt, viral, mycoplasma and bacteria. The sinuses do act rather as a fundamental filter for smallamounts of particles. When overwhelmed, the airway passages in your nose and in the rooms of the hallway of sinuses get excessive particles and bacteria. This will certainly typically cause pooling of fluids, swelling, inflammation, more complicating blockages, and setting up for bacterial and other infections. The sinuses were not implied as filters but rather as lightening of air cells to keep the head put up. Gorillas have no sinuses that is why typically their face typically tilts down. This is due to heavy solid bone mass not hollow with sinuses of the face. The nose has turbinates covered by nasal mucosa which is highly vascular that heat and cleans the incoming and outbound air.

There are 4 main sinuses normally in pairs. There can be multiple sinuses of each sinus. The sinuses might differ on number on the left vs right.

The frontal sinusesare found in the lower central region of your forehead. They are just above your eyes and on both sides of your nose and between your eyebrows. They are just above and behind the central area of your eyebrows under your forehead and in the fontal bones of the skull.

B. Your sphenoid and ethmoidsinuses are a little lower deep inside behind

the central area between your eyes and upper nose. They are held up

deeper in the bones of your skull below your brain. They are held up

much deeper in the central area in between your eyes and nose. They are

about the quarter of volume of your maxillary sinuses. C Your maxillary sinusesare on both sides of the base of your nose under

the bones in your eyes on your face under your cheek muscles. Their size

normally can be that of virtually a hollow golf ball.

An accompanying iOS and Android application will help to track the various tracked metrics. The new smartband will now come in two sizes, one for children designed to be less bulky on smaller wrists, and one for adults. However, even in as the larger prototype I was sent, its still far smaller than competitors, like the colorful, but also gigantic, FiLIP smartwatch for kids . But thats also because the Sync smartband is not as powerful. While the FiLIP is meant to serve as a wearable phone and locator, the Sync is a more typical fitness and location tracking device. For adults, theres not as much value in selecting the Sync over the more polished health trackers already on the market like the Fitbit, Jawbone UP, or Misfit Shine, for example, if youre mainly looking for fitness tracking functions, as Syncs platform is less mature.

Kids and pregnant moms benefit from dairy exposure

If yes, you have just 10% of the risk against the general rural population in developing allergies. According to Sahlgrenska Academy researchers, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, pregnant moms can also benefit from spending time on the dairy farm (hows that for an agri-tourism marketing plan?). The study monitored rural children until the age of three from the Vastra Gotaland Region of Sweden, in the southwest surrounding Gothenburg, examining their immune system in relation to allergies. Half of the children lived on farms that produced milk. But the story isnt over, as researchers will continue to examine the childrens development, next when they turn eight years old. The study, published online June 13 in the Journal of Immunology, also identified children with an allergic disease having a higher percentage of immature B-cells in their blood and first month of life.

It is easy to confuse food allergy and food intolerance, but the two are vastly different and a food allergy could be life-threatening. Many Americans think they have food allergies, but true food allergies are quite rare, occurring in less than 5 percent of the population. In the United States, fewer than 200 people die annually from food allergies. Reactions to food allergies occur immediately, within two hours or less, while food intolerance reactions are delayed, sometimes occurring up to 72 hours after a particular food has been ingested. Report author Dr. Sharon Jacob , a dermatologist at Rady Childrens Hospital in California, told The Associated Press that allergic reactions to nickel arent life-threatening, but can be extremely discomforting and may require treatment if skin reactions become infected. The allergic reaction in the Pediatrics case initially produced scaly patches on the boys skin, but later led to a different kind of reaction that erupted all over his body. This second reaction didnt respond to the usual treatment. The childs condition was eventually determined to be a reaction to nickel and traced to a family iPad purchased in 2010. It could occur at any location, explained Steven Cole, DO, a Baylor allergist, but, the hands tend to be less sensitive to that, so usually its where you touch: your face, around the eyes, the lips, the necks, thats more sensitive skin. According to Dr. Cole, nickel shows up in everything from cellphones to costume jewelry. Medical assistant Kimberly Herrera says she learned that information the hard way. It started by just wearing ring and earrings, she recalled, and it started irritating my ears and my fingers as well. I would break out in hives and get pus on my fingers and it would itch for weeks. According to health experts, allergies whether food based or environmental are becoming more common. Dr. Cole said, Its not just people that are sneezing from things in the airwhether its ragweed, or oak, or your catit could be your iPad, or your Tablet or your laptop that has nickel in it. While the rashes are unsightly and uncomfortable, experts say theyre not dangerous and are typically treated with steroids. The best bet, however, is to avoid the nickel as much as possible and that means keeping the tablet in a case.

One frequently cited reason is that children are less exposed to microorganisms and have fewer infections than previous generations, thereby delaying maturation of the immune system. A study by researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, monitored children until the age of three to examine maturation of the immune system in relation to allergic disease. All of the children lived in rural areas of the Vastra Gotaland Region, half of them on farms that produced milk. Lower risk of allergy The study found that children on dairy farms ran a much lower risk of developing allergies than the other children. “Our study also demonstrated for the first time that delayed maturation of the immune system, specifically B-cells, is a risk factor for development of allergies,” says Anna-Carin Lundell, one of the researchers. Need For Additional Studies Children with an allergic disease at the age of 18 and 36 months had a higher percentage of immature B-cells in their blood circulation at birth and during the first month of life.

Allergies describes an exaggerated response by our body immune system in response to bodily call with specific foreign elements. These foreign elements are typically safe. But, in an individual whose body is susceptible to allergies, these foreign compounds are acknowledged by the body and one part of the body immune system is turned on. “We make sure that we reduce exposure to those food allergies, and then we also have a plan in place in case a student is exposed. The new state law requires that school’s have at least two EpiPens,” Bartos said. These were provided for free and the school must have trained personnel to administer the EpiPens. This year, all Powers teachers will go through that Red Cross training. The growing focus on food allergies has brought a lot of change over the years.

Weird Things That Make Seasonal Allergies Worse Taking the wrong medication Walking down the allergy meds aisle at the pharmacy can prove overwhelmingthere are dozens of drugs to choose from and they all promise to cure your sniffles and sneezing. But most of them can be lumped into one of two categories: antihistamines and decongestants. The trick is knowing which over-the-counter medications will best treat your symptoms. An antihistamine typically relieves sneezing, itchiness, and runny nose, while decongestants combat congestion from swollen nasal passages. Some drugstore options may come packaged with both, but you would only need to use a decongestant if your nose is stuffed up in addition to your other symptoms. If bothersome symptoms persist, that’s when you should really see an allergist, Dr.

Related Lava threat level to change to warning The smoke effect on nearby communities will vary largely depending on unpredictable wind and weather conditions. Smoke contains a mixture of gases and fine particles that may trigger adverse respiratory conditions. Additionally, encroaching lava may contain low levels of sulfur dioxide, an irritant gas emitted by the Kilauea Volcano. DOH recommends that residents in smoke affected areas avoid outdoor activities or physical exertion. People with respiratory illness or heart disease, older adults and children are urged to avoid smoke exposure. Smoke may worsen symptoms for individuals who have pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as allergies, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Individuals that have these conditions should keep their medication refilled and use daily (controller) medication as prescribed. Anyone who feels they may need medication or medical attention should contact their physician.

My sister said my mom even showed her the paperwork. But she must not have sent it in. The lesson? If youve made your own burial arrangements, make sure youve shared the details. The legal and emotional complexity of end-of-life planning went from theoretical to real for me recently when I began helping my 89-year-old father gather his documents. One of the many things I learned: He would like a funeral with military honors, having served in two wars. So Mr. Scroggins advice had special resonance.

But others, like Mason Tvert, director of communications at the Marijuana Policy Project, say its a community program. Tvert told Fox News that the decision to provide the drug to some of its low-income residents is up to the community. So its a matter of the democratic process, people following the states laws, and this law appears to accommodate both of those, he said. California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana nearly 20 years ago. California dispensaries are prohibited by law from turning a profit. But some places have been giving pot away to patients who couldn’t pay for years. One of Berkeleys largest dispensaries, Berkeley Patients Group, has been doing it for a decade, The New York Times reports. One recipient, Arnie Passman, a poet and activist, said hes couldn’t remember exactly how long he had been given medical marijuana or why.

It can cause the body to go into shock, lowering blood pressure and narrowing airways, leading to difficulty breathing. This study showed that 15.6 percent of caregivers over-perceived how their child would react, and 19.3 thought their childs reaction would be less severe than it could be. The researchers found that quality of life was lower for caregivers with an inaccurate perception of how their child would react to an allergen. It was also lower for those with a lower income and those who had children with eczema (an allergic reaction of the skin). Quality of life was also reduced in caregivers of children with multiple food allergies, children who were older when they first showed a reaction to an allergen and caregivers who reported their child had anaphylaxis. Dr. Howe and team expected that parents of children allergic to peanuts would report the lowest quality of life, but this wasnt the case.

Are Vegetarians Less Healthy than Meat-Eaters?

After their parents were given six months of dietary counseling, children with food allergies began getting more key nutrients and eating as many calories as their peers without any food restrictions. Food allergies cause the bodys immune system to have an abnormal reaction like vomiting, diarrhea, eczema or asthma to certain foods. But avoiding these foods means sacrificing the energy and nutrients they provide. Researchers estimate that certain nutrient-rich foods such as cows milk, hens eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish and shellfish are responsible for 90 percent of childhood food allergies. A wide variety of foods are needed for normal growth, said Lynn Christie, a dietician at the Arkansas Childrens Hospital in Little Rock, who was not involved in the study. Christie explained that children grow very fast during the first three or four years of life and being unable to eat these foods could keep them from getting enough calories and nutrients. That might have permanent consequences such as stunted growth, a reduced IQ and poor math skills.

Mroz plans to form the committee by July 1. Its not been in a generation, its been a few years, she said. A few years ago it would be one or two in a building, now you have that many kids in one class. Some neighboring districts have established plans for children with food allergies, and the Illinois General Assembly established statewide guidelines in 2009. The schools have to have a program in place so people will know what to expect, Mroz said. Were doing this now so people will know what is available in the schools. Allergies Are The Real Midlife Crisis | The Columbian

Parents get lots of colds and allergic episodes, mostly because they’re surrounded by disease-ridden children. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. (Among the many unanswered questions about allergies is whether parents are more likely than non-parents to have allergies.) A third explanation for the age-related changes in allergies is psychological. Grayson and many other immunologists put the most stock in this theory.

Parents keep watch as the treatment progresses, keeping the EpiPen at hand, for any signs of swelling, hives or trouble breathing. The issue for now is desensitizaton rather than thinking the kid will be cured. But anything is possible with food oral immunotherapy. In other studies, a new approach to treating peanut and other food allergies appears in recent research These days, more and more people seem to have food allergies, which can sometimes have life-threatening consequences. In ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry , scientists report the development of a new type of flour that someday could be used in food-based therapies to help people better tolerate their allergy triggers, including peanuts in the latest study, ” Novel Strategy To Create Hypoallergenic Peanut ProteinPolyphenol Edible Matrices for Oral Immunotherapy ,” published online April 23, 2014. Mary Ann Lila and colleagues note that of the 170 foods that cause allergic reactions, peanuts can be the most dangerous. These reactions can range from mild itching and hives to life-threatening anaphylactic shock, in which a person’s throat swells, making it difficult or impossible to breathe.

If you make your allergy clear, the establishment will usually take extra precautions. Also, its important to ask questions about ingredients. Consider this tip from My Family Travels : My son is allergic to peanuts, so instead of asking, for instance, if French fries are cooked in peanut oil, which results in a yes or no answer, I ask what kind of oil is used in the fryer. By keeping my questions open-ended, the server is forced to ask the chef about any unknowns as opposed to possibly guessing and I feel more comfortable making decisions based on those answers. 3. When Traveling, Snacks Are Your Friend Put simply, youre simply not always going to find restaurants that can and will make you feel comfortable about their allergen cross-contamination procedures, and so as to avoid problems, sometimes its a good idea to just keep snacks on hand when traveling. Better to have your allergy-friendly food on hand while out and about then to have to stay hungry. If youre in a social situation and the restaurant of choice doesnt work for you, you can leave as a group, or, find something yummy to drink and then nosh on a snack after leaving.
